Hi All,

Looking for some advice on this photograph that was taken on a 445 I am looking to purchase.

Can anyone shed light on whether there has been a repair/upgrade or what the' substance' may be between the rudder stock and bearing mount?

Any and all comment/thoughts appreciated.

many thanks

Hi Ian and Andrea,

Thanks for posting.

I now have 2 photos like yours, and the one I posted, which was taken for me.
Sadly Hanse offered a possible 'human manufacturing anomaly' .

That makes things rather depressing now as the survey is tomorrow.Unhappy

Hope the survey turns out better than you fear!

Good luck :-)

The steering gear failure was due to a corroded chain master link.....its a 7 euro part...
if you have the opportunity, it would be worth checking yours.

hello
May I ask you how old is this boat?
As I look at your pictures it looks not in a very good condition IMO.
Sorry

Thanks for sharing that and reminds me to check out Jefa system again this winter. Last year we used a borescope type camera from below which was quick and easy but maybe this year we'll do it properly!

Cheers.

Im inthe process of buying a boat with the same failure on previous survey same dates as you posted. Did the steering failur backed you up from the deal?

Let me guess, there is no zinck anode on the hull connected to the rudder or you still have the earth wire connected to the steering.

the autopilot pushes hard, and when you are sailing for several days in a row in a sea of trade winds and strong winds
there may be a danger if the installation has not been carried out correctly.
I changed the top bearing and put new screws in the threaded holes and epoxy repair underneath and on top I put an extra epoxy cloth.
The rudder is very wide and the powerful forces when sailing under autopilot don't always realise that you have to reduce the sail area to relieve the boat.
I don't advise anyone to go offshore without checking the rudder and rudder system very carefully.
If I have to start another Atlantic crossing again, I will use a hydrovane windvane gear so that I don't have to use the rudder again.
or if the rudder breaks

sorry for these wrong answers because of the translator.
YES there has been a repair with epoxy
I had this damage myself with a hanse 375 when I was 700 miles from the West Indies.
Hanse has not replied to any emails, the dealer has had similar cases before and told me that sometimes the hole for the upper bearing was made with a jigsaw.
the autopilot is pushing hard, and when you are sailing for several days in a row in a sea of trade winds and strong winds
there may be a danger if the installation has not been carried out correctly.
I changed the top bearing and put new screws in the threaded holes ( 3 broken screws on the 4) and epoxy repair underneath and on top, I put an extra epoxy cloth.
The rudder is very big and the forces exerted are powerful .
when sailing under autopilot we are not always aware of the forces and should have reduced the sail area.

No I didn't...

Not specifically because of this, but rather an amalgamation of this and other issues

ouh! Thinks is the same boat. Yesterday it was surveyed, now waiting on report. Broker sent me a list of repairs the owner made after last survey. Hopefully all the problems were addressed properly since my trip back home is a 5 day sail.

if you’d like to comment on other issues you found negative of the boat I’ll gladly appreciate it.
