My summer cruising is coming to an end, and one thing (of many) I have found is that I want to have a larger outboard. I currently have a Yamaha 9.9 4-stroke that is a great motor, but with more than 2 people my Ribeye 310 aluminum hull dinghy just won’t plane. So somewhere in the future lies a 15hp, or maybe even a 20hp.

Typically I tow my dinghy with outboard while cruising, but whenever I do longer passages I would like to stow the outboard. It won’t fit through the starboard aft hatch, and under the port aft hatch lives my 10kVA generator. I don’t want to hang 50kg on a bracket off the pushpit for obvious reasons. So, where to go? It seems like the front sail locker is the only place to go. Or does anyone have a better solution?

I don’t think you will solve the plane problem with a bigger engine on a (small)3.10m rib.
We change the 8 pk Honda on our 3.20 meter dub alu bottom Zodiac Cadet with a 15 pk Honda.
Result : running a bit faster with 2 people but exactly the same angle with more load in the rib (not coming in plane)
8 pk with a hydrofoil fin and trying out the best trim position give us the best results and almost the same as the 15 pk who was a bit faster but heavier to steer, store and more expensive.

By the way, the Honda BF8 pk is 42 kg the BF15 is 46kg so the weight is not a issue.
It seems to me ,this is the same motorblock just the cylinder capacity is bigger.

We hang ours off the aft pushpit. It is a 48kg 20HP 4stroke Tohatsu EFI. I chose it specifically because it is light weight (for a 4 stroke).

We hang ours on the pushpit facing aft.  We tried it on the side of the pushpit and there was too much flex of the stantions.  But when oriented on the aft, it was solid.

We also have Yamaha 9.9 4-stroke on 3.1m aluminium RIB (AB Lamina) which won't plane easily. Planes beautifully at 18-knots solo; two-up it sometimes does, sometimes doesn't. We bought a 9.9 as recommended by AB's but max capacity is 20hp.

The 9.9 4-stroke is heavy enough at 40Kg. We tried to buy a Yamaha 15hp 2-stroke which weighs only 38Kg; owned one before, they are extremely hardy reliable engines. EU bureaucrats of course banned 2-strokes however this is only for recreational use ... you can still purchase them for other uses such as rescue, racing and any kind of workboat. I found a dealer who would supply one provided the order came through the company I own .... a process we started however we waited months as the importer was unable to source one so we bought the 4-stroke. Maybe somewhere on our journey through Med, Turkey & North Africa next year, we will find one.

As for handling/storage, we have fairly slick process for lifting the 9.9 with topping lift which works fine unless swell is greater than about a foot (30cm) when it all feels very dangerous! The outboard lives on our 445 pushpit which so far has shown no signs of strain.

Hi, 

We have a 15HP suzuki.  Though we generally tow our dinghy for short coastal cruising, when we make longer passages, we lift it with our Spin Halyard and drop it into our forepeak.  We have a mounting bracket on the bulkhead and a slotted, epoxied wood block to rest it on. 

This motor (and it’s 20HP twin block) is just small enough to fit through hatch. 

There is also an M8 center thread on the block so that you can lift when the cowling is removed.
