We are new owners of a Hanse 345, and one of the first things we did was accidentally lock ourselves out (by using the wrong padlock)! However, it was trivially easy to break in, just by loosening the screws (see photo) holding the top cover tracks of the companionway, allowing me to lift it over the washboard and slide back. I'm thinking that there should be something else making this more difficult, either something covering the tracks and so hiding the screws, or another part of the lock stopping the washboard and cover from separating. Does anyone have a 345 or similar who could comment on how the lock should be? thanks, Stuart   |

Hi Stuart I too am a new owner of a 345 and yes the lock is identical to yours. I take the view that if someone wants to break in they will and the least amount of damage they do the better as the repair and nuisance cost will far outweigh the value of anything stolen. In a past life I owned pubs and restaurants and we always left the till open at night as the price of a new till far exceeded the hundred or so pounds of change in the drawer. Stuart, thanks for the tip with the screws, unortunately I keep all my tools inside  When I unlock the hatch I always pull the bolt and snap the lock again into the hole. This avoids locking yourself out.
