I will be adding radar to my 342. Interested in getting feedback as to where best to mount dome on mast.

thank you. Hadn’t thought about that as an option. I was concerned about headsail hanging up.

the Radar on Echo was originally on the front of the mast and was hit by the jib when tacking, especially close to the wind when sheeted in hard. Its now on the side of the mast and clear of the jib. With the main sail fully out it presses on the Radar slightly but this seems much less of a problem.

My radar is mounted aft, approx. 3,5 meters above sea level. Mounting gizmos are also available for a mount in the aft stay. The formula for the distance to the apparent horizon is 2,08*sqr(h). (h in meters). For the distance from your radar mounted at height (H) to a ship with a reflecting surface in the height (h) it is 2,08*sqr(H+h). On my ship the radar will discover a sailboat at a distance of 2,08*sqr(3m+5m) = 6 Nautical miles, and a larger vessel will appear on the radar screen at a distance of 10-15 Nm. (The sailboat is assumed to carry a radar reflector in a height of 5 meters). My radar is capable of discovering other ships at a distance of 24 Nm, (if mounted high), but why should I care about a ship that far away? My point is, that a radar mounted on a pole in the aft may be sufficient for most sailors. (The numbers for visible / apparent horizon are 1,927 and 2,075). This is the way we installed our radar. It works perfekt. It is a scanstrut Mast on the backstay. It is about 3.5m above Waterline

We too have our radar on a mast behind the starboard wheel. I personally like having it within easy reach so that if a repair is needed we can get to it simply. It works great there, and I have determined for me it's better there than dealing with it up the mast.

thanks. Is there a specific bracket that you used or did you have to have it fabricated?

I think most people here use the scanstrut one, not sure if that is available where you are. I'm installing Radar in the spring so interested in this thread. The UK dealer seems to fit the dome at an angle eg pointing towards the Stbd bow (45deg to the centreline) if that makes sense? I tried to find a pic online but can't! This seems to be a happy compromise between fouling the self tacking jib or chafing the mainsail when off the wind. I think that is what I will do
