But I think your bigger worry should be that if it is not turning fully it is probably / possibly not closing fully?

I have just bought a genuine Yanmar 196420-02291 COCK ASSY, WATER 18
This is the seacock for the SD20 saildrive

The seacock rotate 10.5 full revolutions from open to close.
The handle travels 15 mm in/out. Full extended (open) top handle to house is 38.3 mm.

The threads are Tapered and starts at 20.2 mm and stops at 21.15 mm width.

Open:

The looks like Brass and not Bronze. This will be better than the current one installed, and then I have time to wait to see the upcoming product line from TruDesign.

I am not a Fluid Dynamics expert, but the internal design of the valve looks like it will limit a good flow of water.

Thank you for the information H8, but sadly now I think I have to change mine back again. Please keep us all updated if you get any useful information from Trudesign.

Best wishes

Trudesign is a New Zealand company making great quality glass reinforced (GR) nylon fittings.

There is also another New Zealand company who also make ball valves, tails and nipples in glass filled nylon called Hansen. Trudesign make their products with parallel threads, Hansen make them with tapered threads.

When fitting my glass filled nylon ball valve to my saildrive i used Hansen male to male GR nipples. You can also use a male to male bronze nipple and fit your glass filled nylon ball valve to that.

Hi Stephen

There are many active threads on seacocks right now. And I did already post about your setup with Hansenproducts

From their web-page I am unable to find BSPT to BSP nibbles. But more concerning when comparing to TruDesign - a much more narrow Temperature Range.
According to http://hansenproducts.com/tech/thread/pressure.htm the range is only from 'cold water' to 60°C (140°F)
but TruDesign is -40°C to +110°C.

Of cause the nibble would be watercooled, but this flow stops when the engine is turned off.

Also it would be an issue getting the nipples to Europe, because the distribution is limited.
eg:
We will only ship orders to physical addresses within New Zealand, Australia and Fiji.

All skin-fittings/Tru-hulls/Valves are TruDesign on my boat, except this poor Yanmar Seacock. I will replace it, and then wait for TruDesign to make the right fittings/nibbles. 'The chain is not stronger than the weakest link..."

H64 - I think others have answered your ‘what’s a tap’ question. I can confirm that once you run a tap down the thread in the gate valve and remove the calcium build up and regrease then this lasts a long time. 6 years later my inlet seacock is working fine. However I religiously open and close it for each trip. It seems to seize open when it’s not exercised. It’s awkward to reach on the 400e so there is a knack to it. However 6 years and 400 engine hours on it’s still good. Given other comments on this thread I’ll post the tap size when I next visit the boat. It’s really the simplest way to resolve the stuck gate valve issue.

I just made a search for the price of the original Yanmar part "Cock Assy water for SD50", and it seems that Yanmar has no scruples demanding something like $300 (in the U.S.) or €400 (in EU) for this gadget.
It seems, that a better bargain can be found here:

https://www.stevensonplumbing.co.uk/bspt.html

When you have bought the stainless adapter, you can add trudesign or bronze parts.

I used the Hansen BSPT male/male nipple with Trudesign ball valve and have had no issues over 4 years use.

Alternative is to use the Hansen nipple and a Hansen ball valve then the BSPT to BSPT nipple works just fine as Hansen ball valves are BSPT, Hansen ball valves are glass filled nylon and good quality.

While my 342 is out of the water I decided to replace the seized Yanmar seacock on my SD20 saildrive. I considered using a ball valve as others have done, and while I think that would probably be the best solution, it's a little difficult to source BSPT threaded marine grade bronze or SS parts here in the US.

So I ended up just getting the Yanmar part. But I decided to try adding Tef Gel to the threads in an effort to prevent future seizing. I dabbed it onto the threads as in the attached photos, then screwed and unscrewed the valve several times to get it evenly distributed in the body of the valve. I noticed an immediate improvement in how easy it was to operate the valve.

Tef Gel is supposed to not be soluble in salt water, so with any luck this will eliminate the problem. I'll report back in a few months...
