Hi,

I have a surface mount Axiom 7surface mounted on my binnacle. I need to replace the SD card. I can't see how to get to the back of the Axiom to replace it. do I need to open the binnacle and go in from behind or is there a way to remove the front cover pieces to bring it out forwards?

I will try and post a photo next time I am due the boat.

James - the SD slot is on the rear of the unit; you'll need to open the binnacle.  I wouldn't try to pull the front out as you'll likely break the watertight seal and possibly cause other damage.

It's a bit of a faff so I fitted an external Raymarine SD / USB slot which plugs in directly to the back of the Axiom.  You'll need to cut a hole in the binnacle though, if you've space.  See: Raymarine RCR - Remote SD Card Reader and USB Socket | Force 4 Chandlery

Ratbasher,

Thank you.

Going to have a look at the binnacle - but the remote option (although a bit pricy) may be useful!

Understood, James.  Depending on the build of the binnacle, you might get away with just tightening a couple of screws along the base and hinging the unit up, providing you don't stress the upper fittings; that's what I did for the first two seasons.   You might be able to get the SD slot a bit cheaper; I saw one on Ebay for about £115.  However, unless like me you build a course on a laptop and export it the plotter via card (which might be possible via bluetooth/wifi anyway), you'll only have to open it up for operating system or chart updates so the benefit wouldn't justify the cost in any event.

Good luck!

Yes, I find it annoying that whilst you can do system updates via wifi, I have to completely open up my binnacle pod to get the SD card out.  Chart updates do not get done too often.

Four screws on the binnacle and enough space to get in and pop the card out.

Now to get it updated.

Thanks for the help.
