Hello all,

I can't work this out for the life of me.
We have the Selden single reef line system on our 385. The line broke where the boom joins the mast and the line is now inside the boom. We need to replace this but can't work out how it's done.

There's a traveller inside the boom for this but how do you get to it? Please don't tell me we need to remove the whole boom to get to it? It looks riveted on there anyhow.

It's reef one that's gone.

Any ideas would be most welcomed.

Regards,
Simon

you have to take off te front or back part of the boom
drill out the nails , and you can get a line inside

I have done this, a bit tricky but you don't need to drill or anything like that. You need to use the other reef line, attach two mousing lines to this and feed through to the end where it broke.
Now the tricky part you will need to fiddle it through with an old bent metal hanger or something like that. Then replace the mousing line with the new reefing line. Need to find out why the old one broke , did on chafe on something.

To "drive" the new line through the boom without trouble you can tape your new line to your longest sail batten

Simon,

We had our reef 2 line fixed whilst we were in Greifswald by the W&R guys. I assume the fitting of the reef 1 or 2 are the same. They removed the outer end plate on the boom (opposite end to the mast end) which enabled them to remove the pulley assemble and access all the reefing lines. The components are held in by allen key bolts accessed from the outside of the boom. They then pushed a long sail batten through to the mast end and attached the new reef line to it to put it back through. For some reason the reefing line had a join in it and it had parted at the join.

By the way - congratulations to you and Helen on your successful trip across the Atlantic.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice.
But the line I'm talking about is the one that has the big knot in it near where the mast joins the boom.
There are two pulley parts in the boom, one near the mast and one near the end. The one near the end is easy to remove. But getting at the one near the mast- that holds this knot is the issue.

It's not feeding a new line, it's replacing the line that has a knot inside the boom and then connects to the sail near the mast.

Has anyone had to do this part? Not sure a mouse line would help here. You need to remove the whole pulley part. Can that be done from the end of the boom?

What kind or reefing do you have? It doesn't sound like my slab reefing.

It's a single reef line system as per the images from the link above. If you look at that image the line that has gone is the smaller one from the right side pulley system, the line with the knot. I need to be able to remove that pulley system but don't know if you can do that without taking the whole boom off and drilling out the rivits to take the end cap off?
