    Posted: 17 May 2023 at 00:24
Hello all
I have recently sucked a rope into the thruster and I believe sheared the drive pin off.  I have a very basic RMC manual that came with my 470.  The manual is very basic in its instructions on replacement of a broken shear pin - remove electric motor (only if you have a 140 or 185 model) and replace shear pin and reinstall the electric motor.

So I have a few questions
1.  I’m unable to tell what model I have as its only identification is “RMC - Serial Number 001565”
2.  What is this now called in Lewmars world now they took these over?
3.  Is this work able to be done while in the water ?  Anyone done this and have any tips/tricks before I head into this piece of work?

Thanks ahead of time

Charlie

Hello
Normally on the 470 it’s the 185 TT RMC
But you can check this 185mm is the diameter of the prop.
The Lewmar parts number 559017 SHEARPIN 185TT
you can do it in the water.
You have to take off the heavy motor 4 bolts
Lift the motor and sometimes the drive shaft will come out together with the motor sometimes the shaft stay in place inside de tube
There's 2 shearpins one on top of the shaft to make the connection with the motor, one on the bottom off the shaft to make the connection with the gearbox.
I hope this works out for youTongue there’s a possibility the shaft of gearbox is broken that’s a different story
You need to go on the dry and this gearbox is expensive stuff .

Thanks Wild appreciate the reply and information - I had a local yard here in Vancouver confirm the 185 TT model so you are correct!  He’s ordered the two shear pins and I will attempt to pull the motor off next week and have a look at the shafts - I hope it’s just the shear pins!!

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Well the update on the shear pins is not what I had hoped for - I pulled the motor and found that both shear pins are in good shape still ….now must haul boat and change the gear box!  I’ll post pics of the fix so we all have this documented…..of the joys of boating. Confused - if the fix is the gear box I find it hard to believe the gears went before the shear pins did ….not a great design!

Sorry to hear that.
RMG changed the material of the shearpin on 2011-2012 just on the moment Lewmar takes over the production.
I had a broken gearbox 2011 our 2012 and contact the RMG production manager and I told my the material was to strong and I get 2 new gearboxes (1 spare) in warranty as a compensation.😊
Still with the new shearpins I have broken once again a gearbox so the last one is on the boat. We

Thanks Wild - ok my Lewmar rep says they don’t carry the gear box anymore ….typical! I do however see I can buy some stock from Mauripro - now they sell both the ratios you talk about - are you able to look at the ones you have (spare) and let me know what ratio you have?  It will save me ordering from the US and having to ship back the incorrect one once I haul out and replace.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Regards

Sorry
But the 2 replacements I get from RMC are the original ones , at that time RMC used already Lewmar gearboxes, and there’s no notice about ratio and not give me the Lewmar parts number.
Try to contact Lewmar technical service they has to know the ratio of the old one 2010-2011 they use then on there one Bowtrusters (retractable our fixed)that period
I can only check it when I take the gearbox ( our electric motor) of and turn the prop 1 turn to see the result of rotating of the schaft.
I do my best to find it out
