Hi All, I just had a survey done on a 430e. It has a new (2 years) factory make rudder installed as the old one snapped the tip off in mud.
When the surveyer presented me with thermal imaging and the inner construction is clear. However, the rudder sounds very hollow. Are these rudders foam cored? Also, even when tapping the rudder stock, there seems to be areas where there is not 100% contact between the fiber glas and the stainless stock in a couple of areas. Has anyone experienced anything like this? |

AndersOtt,
The rudders are made by Jefa - Denmark www.jefa.dk the rudder shafts are aluminum. The rudders are not made by Hanse.

Thanks Wayne,
I understood that the steering was Jefa not the rudders. Thanks for explaining! BTW crossed the pacific in 19. Amazing. Anders

Anders,
Happy to help. I have always found Jefa to be very helpful. Still looking at starting our trip across the Pacific probably in 2023.

Not sure about the larger models but back in 2003 the rudders were made by a , now deceased, polish company. To put it bluntly-- were rubbish ![]() Here is mine that split in 2 halves after a very light grounding Edited by samuel - 04 August 2021 at 07:53 |

Way back in the long distant past there is a series of threads on this forum about bad rudders from the polish company. It is a good chance that your 2004 hanse 312 might also have had a polish one. Hanse did not change immediately problems arose. Jefra's construction is much different to the one shown in the picture.

Thanks all,
Heard back from Jefa. The alu stock is laid up in the port half, similar to what Samuel show here, so essentially you could imagine the same split as you show here. The voids that we have identified are for sure a concern as i will likely bring the boat noth for a winter or two at one point. Any frost split rudders here? Anders
