Second autopilot

I will install a second autopilot with direct connection on the rudderstock with draglink.
The option today is Jefa DD1 with SImrad AP24.
Has anyone ever considered such an installation with double wheel steering gear like on the 430?

I guess the reason is to have a spare Autopilot.
Isn't it easier to carry spare parts to replace either the motor or the "brain". Even a second spare cabling system can be installed in case the cables have a problem.
Having two different autopilots, both ready to steer the boat has some advantages, but also the big danger of engaging both of them at the same time. This could be fatal.
Having a autopilot directly acting on the rudder is a very good idea, since in case of steering system failure you can still drive the boat.
In the 630 each of the two steering wheels drives the rudder independent from the other one. The autopilot motor is connected to one of them.

Hi,

The AP24 is a wonderful product.
Be very careful where you install the compass. Mine is over the keel, at the water level height. I had to reposition some iron items installed nearby and now the compass is +/- 2 degrees from the magnetic one.
Wind tracking mode works!!!
The pilot drives the boat downwind with spinnaker in medium-heavy waves without problem. Later I might trust "him" in heavy weather also.
Also tacking and under certain circumstances also gybing works perfectly.
