I have no instruction manual for the shore power system on our Hanse 385. Please can anyone answer the following?
1. When connected to shore power, is Battery 1 or Battery 2 or both batteries, charged? 2. In which position does the Emergency Link switch link Battery 2 (service) to Battery 1 (engine)? Thank you!

Hello Nameless,
Both while on shore power as well while running the engine both the engine battery as well as the service battery or batteries if you have two in parallel will be charged. With no external power the black switch box in the service battery compartment will disconnect the two banks, thus only the service battery will be de-charged. If you in addition have a bow thruster it's battery is linked to the above system via a battery to battery (12 V - 12 V) Charger, I believe although it will take charge from the service battery it will not empty it. In case your engine battery will be down (which should be rather unlikely) one can use the a/m switch box to reconnect engine battery and service battery, one has to take take off the short thin wire off and connect it to the other pin in the switch box. I am away from my boat, next week I can sent a photo. Best Ralph |

Hi Ralph,
Thanks for the clarification about the purpose of the switch box in the service battery compartment. I am about to add solar (Victron controller) and a victron Smartshunt to my boat and am a little puzzled about connections among the switch box, shunt, and controller. Should the shunt go between fused bus bar and the switch? Current wiring: 2 100 Ah lithium batteries wired in parallel, positive run to fused bus bar, bus bar and battery neg wired to the switch. Any clarification/suggestions are welcome! Cathy

Hi Cathy,
A shunt should always go in the negative leg, directly behind the batteries pole, no other connection between battery pole and shunt. The other side of the shunt continues a before. The solar should go to the fused bar, better to have a flying fuse in that line, too. By the way, are the LiPO batteries factory installed, or retrofitted? The switch should be replaced by a special LiPO charger. Your engine generator likely is set to charge lead batteries (I assume the starter battery still is lead?), charging of LiPO batteries require special parameters otherwise you will not benefit much for the advanced chargin& speed of a LiPO. Check the forum here, there are numerous post about LiPO settings. Best regards Ralph
