Hi all. My wife and I recently purchased a Hanse 470 in France, so we are new to the forum, but we look forward to sharing with you.

My question here is related to the spreaders. We recently had an issue that wattanted having riggers go up the mast for an inspection. We’ll share more about that we we have a clearer understanding. In the process of inspecting the standing rigging, they found a crack in a spreader near the base. They tell us this is a common problem with the design due to the small amount of material between the inner pins and the inner edge of the spreader. So, they say, we should address this issue at all the spreader to mast joints.

But, I haven’t yet found any posts regarding spreader problems on This forum. It seems like I should if this problem is common. Has anyone had I heard of similar problems.

We will appreciate any feedback,

Hi,

I had to replace all my spreaders on my Sparcraft mast one year ago. Cracks where found on both spreaders on starboard side.

Thanks for the info and pics, Lykke. One of ours is cracking at the same spot as yours in one of your pics, though not nearly that bad yet. I was really wondering whether we really needed to address all of them, or just the one that's cracking. Looks like doing them all might be wise.

Thanks again

Welcome,

Hope we can all help.

I had an issue in our 2008 model https://www.myhanse.com/rig-tension_topic6786_post54325.html?KW=spreaders#54325 is an article of mine having had a similar experience.  I replaced the one and I've not had a reoccurance, whether it is incorrectly tensioned standing rigging or too many accidental gybes only a metallurgist could say.

i have a 430e that i just bought. it had receipts showing work done on the spreaders and that the mast had come out 2 yrs ago along with new standing rigging but after my purchase i thought i need  a rig check and quote to do a few things extra i wanted to do such as single line reefing and a proper german system with 2 line 1 for port and starboard. Turns out theres a crack in the mast between the rivet on mast and the spreader piece that the spreader fits into and then the spreader is peeling away due to movement. Photos below-   The rigger proposes repairs as per other photos below. ANy feedback would be appreiated . (Pittwater Sydney Australia)
Trying to upload pictures but its very difficult to get to the right size.
more to come

This is what I wrote in my earlier ‘lessons from a refit’ post on the H400 that might be relevant:

The riggers noted several deformities on the mast tubing around the Spreaders.  This was wear & tear caused by cyclic loading at sea and basically, the areas were just worn out.  It required the fitting of ‘mast doublers’ [with new spreaders] to ensure the structural integrity of the mast but the cost was a painful £3500.  However, that was nothing compared to a sudden failure of the mast at sea.  Recommend that owners lower masts at least every 3-4 years and have a thorough check by a professional rigger.

Hi
I have yet to experiance trouble with the spreaders or mast tube like Ratbasher. (Sparcraft Hanse 370)
But I have some observations that could atleast explain the failed spreaders.
My boat had started it's life in the Netherlands where it is custom to not unstep the mast.
Here in Denmark we often unstep the mast every year.
I notice that the dogbone (thing that holds the spreaders) are made from some exotic alloy and that it also holds a stainless shroud.
Because of this mix of metals there is a lot of corossion taking place inside the spreaders where it sits against the dogbone.
My solution is applying Mast Oil (eg. Hempel Alu Protect or similar) to the inside of the spreaders. This has stoppede furter corossion.
I would guess a bad gybe or bad rig tension combined with years of corosion inside the spreaders would lead to fatigue and sudden failure.
