How do you sail downwind and make a stable clew for the foresail?
More specific... I use three foresails on my H315 Pieterman: the ST-jib, a code zero and a gennaker. I'm looking for information on creating a stable clew when sailing downwind? I mean sailing at an angle more than 140°, when the main sail blocks the wind for the foresail. I also mean sailing really downwind (180° and not a broad reach course), like with the main on starboard side and the foresail on port side or vice versa. - What's the length of your (spinnaker) pole on your H315? - I know a genny or code 0 are not made for the 180° downwind course, but if I want to use the code 0 for instance, is this length of the pole the same as the length of the spinnaker pole? - How so you succeed in stabilizing the ST-jib on a 180° course? - Did you try sailing with job on one side and another foresail on the other? on my 320 the spinnakerpole is 411cm. For downwindsailing without gennaker or spinnaker I use the pole to bring the High Aspect to the other side than the main. And I use a preventer. This setup is stable.

This post shows how I control my jib down wind and then how I goosewing it.
https://www.myhanse.com/controlling-the-jib-downwind_topic10476_post88083.html?KW=jib#88083 Last year, we were certainly faster downwind with this setup, than a similar yacht that was broad reaching and gybing. If you pm your email address, I have also have found a magazine article on how to set up a a asymmetric spinnaker and then switch it to acting as a symmetrical spinnaker on a pole. I can't guarantee a quick response, as we are packing up today to go back up to Scotland to get the mast put back up and the yacht launched at long last. Just for completeness, here are links to some other threads I have commented on on using chutes. If you look at this thread and the related ones, you can see how I set up the tack line so it can be adjusted from the cockpit. http://www.myhanse.com/bullseye-for-tackline_topic10634_post89225.html?KW=chute#89225 You may also find some of the related thread of use on how I hoist and lower the chute. http://www.myhanse.com/snuffers_topic10698_post89894.html?KW=chute#89894 |
