Got a package from Elon Musk today, with a brand new Starlink kit. I’m really excited about this! Unfortunately I am away working in Tokyo and won’t be back on the boat till mid-October. If there’s interest I’ll keep you updated on how well it works.

So, I got to try it out. The set I have includes a 2nd generation dish. In a steady environment it works amazingly well. I saw speeds up to 150mbps down, and 50 up. But, as soon as the dish moves it cuts out. That, combined with the fact that as soon as you move to a different bay or marina you have to re-configure your location, which it not always accepts, makes it basically useless for use on a boat. Also, it won’t let you cross borders. This has to do with licensing issues between Starlink and each country. We are still a ways away from Starlink being a viable solution to us cruisers. According to Elon Musk new hardware (smaller, and less power-hungry) is in the pipeline, and agreements are being negotiated worldwide. But this is definitely going to take a while. It is very obvious though that the system has great potential, and I am excited to see how soon this all will be implemented.

When you say it loses signal with any movement. How much movement are we talking about?
Sounds like it works on a marina, what about on a calm anchorage with the occasional wake of a passing dinghy? When it loses signs how long did it take to reestablish? Reliable affordable internet is the only thing keeping me tied to land!

Gentle rocking of the boat is enough to lose signal. Signal loss varied from 15 seconds to a couple of minutes. I am afraid Starlink will still keep you tied to land.
