High Time has developed an occasional 'clonk' in the steering under autopilot.

I unscrewed the floor yesterday to take a look and found that the drive motor (Jefa) has some float (up/down freedom of movement) on the shaft. When you lift it up it makes the exact clonk I'm hearing so I think this may be the culprit; everything else looks/sounds OK.

My questions -

  • how much float is normal on this shaft - mine has maybe 2mm up/down freedom?
  • any theories on why this has just started after 18 months moderate use?
  • has anyone else had issues with the drive motor?

. . . . . . . so, no-one has had any problems with their autopilot drive?

That's good.

I wonder why mine has started 'clonking' then?

Well I get "clonks" but they've always been there and I assumed it was normal. Haven't had a chance to check the Jefa shaft yet. Have you checked with Jefa? I understand they respond quite quickly to emails.

Thanks Charles.

No I haven't tried Jefa yet but will do so now.

I'm hoping to get IMG to have a look sometime soon. We are scheduled to leave on our summer cruise (south Brittany) in a couple of weeks so am anxious to get this sorted before we leave. IMG suggested it's the cables but I had already checked these. I'm pretty sure it's the DD1 shaft that's moving slightly.

I didn't know there were any cables. Perhaps your setup is different. If it was cables or alternative linkage, I assume they would be within the pedestal linking the wheel to the deck level linkages, whereas the Jefa drive is remote from the pedestal. Can you reproduce the clonk by simply moving the wheel from side to side quickly just a short way?

No. The only way I could reproduce the noise was by lifting the DD1 shaft up and down. It has a couple of millimetres float. This may be 'normal' but seems slightly excessive to me.

The 415 steering has cables from the wheels, down the pedestals and round the quadrant. The DD1 drag link operates directly on the quadrant.

I have now written to Jefa and will post their response.

IMG will be taking a look at the system next week.

If it's a new "clonk" then it can only mean that something inside is wearing and... Murphy's law is waiting to prove itself. Don't spoil your vacations, get it fixed.

Roger,

We have no clonk yet, but are using an Octopus drive instead of Jefa. Good luck and please keep us posted. Thx.

When my Hanse was new and first summer in water I heard also sounds in the tiller compartment. The sound was coming from not enough tighten bolt that keeps the intermediate piece cripped to rudder shaft delivering movement from rudder shaft to stearing equipment (is t called quadrant?).

Best Regards

After about six months I was experiencing severe "clonks" which sounded expensive. We removed the panel above the Jefa motor and determined the motor to be the problem. IMG organized a replacement which I refitted and this cured the problem. However getting 1.85M into the 415 rear compartment and finding the wiring in 40C was interesting. In the end we cut the cables and fitted a watertight joint near the motor. No problems since!
