The following message has just been received from Jefa (copied as received)
The
spot you are looking at concerning the shaft who is moving up and down, is not
the main issue. The movement can be up to ½-1 millimeter, that is standard on
nearly all drives. And this play have always been on your drive from the
delivery as new. You can play with the pilot offset to get a more smooth
signal/power to the drive, or you can brake the steering one of the steering
wheels a little, to avoid the inertia effect, who is the main
problem. Please
do not worry about the brake will get worn, it will never
happen. NB.
If you measure the up/down moving it is for sure not 2mm. I
am sure this will help you in the future. Best regards. Stig Jensen. This is reassuring, except the float does seem larger than 0.5 to 1mm (although I haven't attempted to measure it yet). IMG are still scheduled to have a look at the boat this week. I will report again with their conclusions. |

Thanks for the info Roger. The comment about using the brake is very useful and good to know it will not wear. However, I get a very aggravating squeal from the area of the brake from time to time, which would perhaps be even more pronounced if the brake was always slightly on. Worth trying though, to see if there is any effect on the clonk.

IMG have now inspected the boat and agree that the float and associated clonk are unacceptable. They are arranging a replacement.
The only problem - will it arrive before we (are scheduled to) depart on our summer cruise at the end of next week?

Did IMG say whether they had come across this before? From what you said previously, I get the impression that it was a fault from manufacture. Hope the replacement comes speedily.

Yes - a couple of times, I understand. One of them must be "Rod" - see post at the bottom of Page 1.
IMG (Mick) explained the problems they've had previously trying to obtain replacements direct from Jefa. They now obtain such replacements direct from the (Hanse) factory, which takes 7 to 10 days (normally). Fingers crossed! PS I went out on a friend's 400 yesterday. His (3 year old) autopilot was completely silent and there was no float on the motor shaft.

The replacement drive was received by IMG in the morning of the day we were planning to depart on our summer cruise. However, IMG immediately arranged for a contractor to bring the new motor from Hamble Point to Port Solent and fit it before we left.
After nearly 200 miles (we are currently in Trebeurden, north west Brittany), a large proportion on auto pilot, I am delighted to report that the clonk has completely gone and the system is performing as quietly as it did at handover. Another example of IMG's excellent after sales support! Thanks guys.

Nice to know it has all worked out well. I wonder if we will ever know what went wrong with the Drive. Have a nice trip Roger.

Hello all
I just spent one month cruise (south great Britanny & Scilly Island) on my H385 (sept 2012 #139) . I more often have a "clong" coming from the steering compartment. I have open this box and the noise is coming from de DD1. My boat is under warranty but I have no contact with my dealer (change of hanse network ). So do you think that a direct request to hanse solve my problem . Thanks and best regards |

It can do no harm to contact the Hanse factory direct. They may help but they may also suggest you pursue Jefa. However, as you will see from earlier in this thread, Jefa were not very helpful when I contacted them.
Has your dealer gone out of business or just no longer dealing with Hanse yachts? If they are still trading then you still have a contract with them and could try pushing harder for some support. Part of the money you paid them when you bought the boat should have been put aside for warranty support. Good luck. PS My DD1 has started clonking again, albeit not as loud or as frequently as before. I have advised IMG of this but will live with it for now. As said before, it is just end float in the drive axle and is unlikely to fail completely. However, it is annoying!

Ours is usually quiet. However, when there is a following sea, the autopilot struggles and clonks. In very big following seas, the clonk is frequent and I then take over the steering and the clonk stops, thus confirming that the autopilot is the cause of the clonk.
