That is a comforting, Peter. I therefore assume this is completely normal for a Jefa DD1 system.

We've sailed from Germany and are currently in Bora Bora on our 385. We also get the 'clonk'. I get the same as another poster. In large following seas it happens.
It sure can sound nasty at times but I've never experienced any problems with the unit's performance. All the best, Simon

Hi,
this topic has not been discussed for a long time but now we have this problem too. On our Hanse 415 from 2013 we heard the clonk first last year. I‘m wondering if any of you found a lasting solution to get rid off this clonk? Thanks for any answer Frederic

HI Guys, we have a '14 415 and also get a mild clonk on a broard reach that you can feel through the floor around the helm.
Just as a side note that may be of interest to some. Last year we were at sea and the auto pilot wouldn't disengage. We sailed 3 days with it on constantly, as I was too scared that if It did eventually release it would never reengage again. Turned out there are 2 electro magnets that deploy pins to engauge auto. These (being magnetic and steel) rusted to the point they jammed in the drive. Be aware as apparently this is not uncommon.

Hi Jeremy, thanks a lot for this information. After solving your problem (by the way, how did you solve it?), did the clonk disappear?

Hi Frédéric
Following this problem, our pilot on 385 was traded by jefa after the intervention of the French dealer (firos). Since we had no other problems on the driver. Regards

I still have a mild clonk occasionally downwind mostly. The electromagnet thing is totally unrelated but something to be aware of. I was told that they are a maintenance item on the unit. A reasonably easy fix to replace them with the guidance of your Jefa dealer.

Hi,
Really interesting thread, our 418 also developed a clunk after about 1100 miles and especially in big seas. After inspection turns out the four bolts had come loose that secures the black box driving the arm. These just need tightening back into GRP that resolved movement in the system and stopped the clunks. Not sure if the same issue but may be worth a check? Also found on a 418 water drains into the triangular alloy quadrant on the rudder shaft that creates a permanent puddle within the quadrant so IMG drilled a couple of small drainage holes that fixed the issue. Good sailing. Jon.
