I am having a custom made traction strut made. It’s £160. A good quality unit so I’ll report back on how well it functions and how long it lasts!
Have installed a pulley system as well.

Yes. It was actually broken when we brought the boat second hand. Wasn’t picked up on the survey and I must admit I didn’t think to check. Seems to be a common problem.

I know that Johcow's 418 also had issues but it was badly positioned from factory and the dealer repositioned it. Basically it was bottoming out and bending the eyebolt and loosening the screws but then when it came unscrewed it did the same again. Mine is OK so far. They need to be watched but local suppliers of gas struts can regas them fairly cheaply.

Just an idea: I have 2 fixed lines besides the gas springs, they take all the load when walking on the platform and not the gas springs. ( Gas spring is not 100 % open so no load on it ) Maybe this can help in the idea, when there is no load on it can not break. The Gas-springs are only there to have a secure opening of the platform not to take the load in my opinion. |

Fitted the new gas spring. It’s a slightly longer unit so the top mounts are moved up to compensate. The spring is not fully open when the platform is down so no chance of damage.
The top mount is fixed into an aluminium plate bonded into the glass. New m5 threads cut. Works well so far. |

After 3 years the ball became loose. Must have been the result when the cylinder was repeatedly loaded and released by waves hitting the lowered platform. Reattached and secured with Loctite. Problem never occurred again.
I also have 2 dyneema strops on both sides and the mainsheet arrangement as per foto above, this allows a) my wife to raise the platform effortlessly and b) takes part of the load when the platform is lowered.
