Absolutely not.  Tank -> electric pump -> pre-filter -> engine fuel pump  / engine fuel filter -> injectors -> return feed to tank.

Thanks Paul and Martin/Rene.

So if I understand correctly, fuel goes directly from the fuel tank to the engine (probably through the secondary fuel filter?) and the return line goes through the primary filter before the fuel is returned to the engine ?

Thanks, Koen

The set up on my yacht, which I think is quite common, is that the feed to the engine from the fuel tank will have a valve near the fuel tank.  As the last post has said, there will then be a return line from the engine as the flow rate of the high pressure pump is much higher than what is actually needed by the engine.  It varies from engine to engine, but some comments are that over 50% of the fuel is recycled back to the tank.

The other valve outlet from the fuel tank is then the diesel heater.

The Wix is an equivalent to the 'universal' DELPHI HDF296 which is used for marine and commercial vehicles across the world.  Volvo install their own branded version as OEM, but I believe that the WIX, AC Delco, Mann, Bosch equivalents are all suitable substitutes and will almost certainly be a lot cheaper.

There will not be a bypass to the pre-filter.  You should recheck your fuel line tracing.  There will eventually be a return line to the fuel tank for unused fuel to cycle back to the tank.  This fuel will have passed through the fuel pre-filter first and serves to clean ("polish") the fuel while your engine is running.

A glass bowl can be fitted to the pre-filter, though it may be best to replace the whole filter body and bowl as a matching set (with a Lucas CAV / Delphi equivalent).  Be careful though, as I believe the often found plastic bowl is not approved for the location which is not physically isolated from the engine bay and is considered to be a fire hazard.  You may decided that the filters are so cheap that it is simply easier to routinely replace the pre-filter (at least annually) and to check for dirty / wet fuel at that time - unless you have a history of fuel / fuel tank problems.

Regards,  Paul

It appears the factor installed filter is a Wix 33166.

I found the primary filter. What I do not yet understand is that there are 2 fuel lines from the diesel tank, one goes straight to the engine, the other feeds through the primary filter.

With the line that goes straight to the engine, doesn't that defeat the purpose of the primary filter?

Also, people are advising to replace this primary filter with one that has a clear glass, should I consider that ?
Is 861014 the part number for the factory installed primary filter  (10 micron) ?

Thanks everyone, I will go and find it this weekend!
Silly that I only checked on the starboard side where the fuel tank is...
Hopefully I don't have to clean out the locker to get to it...:)

The easiest access is through the hatch from the heads. Lift the floor section that gives access to the water heater.

Yes.  I have the same configuration.  Lift the floor in the locker and you will find the calorifier (boiler) and diesel pre-filter.

On the port side we have the bathroom with separate shower (eg no berth).
Behind that is the large storage locker under the cockpit. Is it supposed to be in that area?
