I changed my Facnor top furler last year. The new furler looked a lot stronger and better made than the original. The new top furler cost eu550 in France. Took me about two hours to replace so not a huge job. Facnor advise to rinse copious amounts of water through the furler twice a year to keep i running freely.

I have had random intermittent issues with my Furlex roller reefing jamming since acquiring our 2005 Hanse 312 about a year ago. Issue definitely at the top bearing; however I unfortunately don't have the capital at this to replace the unit, which my rigger also recommended. Issue worsened once I replaced the working head sail with a 135% Genoa, but I have found that a bearing lubrication maintenance plan appear to have resolved the issue. A few drops of silicone lubricant into the open upper bearing housing every 2-3 months has made a significant difference.

On my Facnor furler from 2003, I was able to take the top cover off the top swivel quite easily and then I could look down into the top ball bearing race. In my case, the ball bearings were black, possibly as a result of being berthed near a coal terminal, and so I just squirted silicone lubricant on to them and few times to clean them up, as in fact they are steel balls. The whole system now runs a lot easier, so I will make this exercise a regular maintenance task, though thankfully, the coal terminal has now ceased operation.

My top swifel seems to be a total write off as well.
However, I found out that the cause of the swifel turning difficultly is in the length of the jib. In my situation the angle the halyard must make toward the mast is at least 45 degrees, while no more than approximately 10-15 degrees is recommended. At this very moment, my sail is being shortened. Before replacing the top-swifel, I want to experience the effect of the smaller halyard angle. Has anybody done the same?

The Facnor Racing Furlers are good, the standard Furlers aren't. I would go for either Harken or Selden. Maybe they give you a good price for the swifel directly from the factory as they know theire problem. Newer Swifels are a little bit different as far as I know!

Thanks for your reply. It confirms what others have said, and it prompts me to rethink just replacing the head swivel.. A whole new furler is not a cheap fix, but I'll give this some thought. What sold you on the Furlex brand in particular?

Failure of the top swivel is a common problem with the Facnor system. There seem to be different views on how serviceable it is- a pal tells me he found instructions for servicing one on the internet somewhere but my rigger maintains it is not serviceable. The best way to service it is indeed by replacement- in my case I replaced the whole thing with a Furlex which is a vastly superior system. Best suggestion is to price up doing the same.

I have not looked t mine but I have had to replace the shackle fixing then forestay to the mast as it twisted by 45 degrees. So possibly there is a problem there.
I suppose that if one was in the position of having to replace the top swivel it might be worth drilling 2 very small holes of , say, 2mm diameter on opposite sides of the bearing, or one down from the top, & squirting the bearing full of thin oil to see what would happen. Taking care to remove the drill every 1mm or so to remove swarf to clear the holes so none went into the bearing. Might be worth a go as the decision to change the bearing would be to change it if it did not work anyway. If it is a case of grease hardening the thin oil might loosen it. If it is a case of ball collapse then nothing lost. |
