We have competed last weekend on the North Sea with our Hanse 370 Together.
We raced from Scheveningen To Harwich (110 Nm ) in 15 hour and 5 min.
We than had a avarage speed from 7,2 knots and in the longest part a speed from between 8 and 9 knots and in surfs 12,2 knots on the log.
We sailed in ORC 3 in the Vuurschepen race and came in first in our class and became 2e on handicap behind a X332.
From Harwich to Scheveningen we had a longer trip from aprox 150 Nm.
We did this in 23 hours and 19 min.
It was a beautiful day only cold in the night.
We came in 2e bout in Schevingen and on hadicap also 2e.
We sailed with standard main sail , standard selftacker , second hand Genua and Spinaker , and actualy did very well.
In the future we still have to mount a featering prop , because the crew were complaning about the noise from the prop being roatated bij the streaming water so they could not sleep wile sailingConfused

The gearhandle should be in a reverse position when you sail so that the propellor does not move. Less stress on the gear + you gain increased speed.

Marcel,
Fantastic, well done, the timings look great.
Can you put some foto's up.
I know what you mean about the prop.
@oddmund, interesting thoughts, I do not know as I am no prop expert, but there seems to be two schools of thoughts in UK.Confused
1) put the gear handle in reverse so prop does not move, why reverse and not forward, - the drag will be the same if the prop is not moving as it does not change shape?  BUT it does have the advantage of fixing the prop and therefore not wearing out the bearings.
2) by putting in neutral, it allows the prop to rotate in the direction that is of least resistance and so reduces drag when going forward, but has the disadvantage of having continual movement and so wears out the bearing.

The above are the arguments that abound club houses up and down the length and breadth of UK, but no assured correct and provable answer comes out on top.

As I say I am not a prop engineer, so prehaps there is one in the forum who can clear this up once and for all.

Gear position: Forward vs reverse should not matter as far as I can understand, the only thing you want to achieve to to stop the rotation. To memory I think that Yanmar states explicitely in the installation or user manual that it should NOT be in neutral when sailing. As it requires force to turn the propellor the drag will reduce the boatspeed, not much I guess but measurable Im sure

Marcel,
It looks fantastic, you look as if you are really trucking along.  The red boat seems to have had a slight hiccup!

@oddmund,
I have started a new thread as to the quetion of what to do with the fixed prop whilst sailing, the drag if left to free wheel is less than if fixed in either forward or reverse? BUT it does protect the bearing, when in gear.
