The idea behind this is to gather in one thread an idea of the sort of racing we all do in our boats.....

In our Hanse 342, Scorpio, we intend to carry on the style of racing that we did in our last boat, that is:

Royal Southampton Yacht Club Double Handed Series - a series of 8 races each season - four inshore, four offshore.  Double handed racing is very social as you tend to mix with the other participating crews after racing whereas I have found in fully crewed racing you go out as a crew and do not mix as much with other crews.  There are two Royal Southampton Club Handicap classes, two IRC classes and a Multihull class.  In 2007, as it is our first season with Scorpio we intend to enter the Club Class section.

We will also enter the Island Sailing Club "Round the Island" (Wight) race - this is fully crewed and is one of the biggest yacht races in the world with between 1200 and 1800 entries.  This year it is on 23rd June.

In future years we plan to do some longer distance two handed races, perhaps - RSYC Santander Double, Round Britain & Ireland or the AZAB.  In preparatino for this Scorpio has been specified to comply with ISAF Category 2.

For sails we are going to compete in 2007 with a Hanse standard main and self tacker, a Sanders Sails asymmetric and a Sanders storm jib.

In order to assess how the boat competes against her handicap and to get people who will be sailing on her familiar with the boat, we are also going to enter the last two races in the RSYC Frostbite series on 18th February and 4th March.

In our Hanse 342, Abstinenz, we intend to participate in the local Koege Bay series. A serie of 16 races 14 inshore olympic triangel races of 6,5 Nm and 2 inshore/offshore distance races of 30Nm.

The average number of boats are about 50-60 divided into i 4 groups depending on boatsize/speed (DH-handicap rules) and whether the boat has a spinnaker/gennaker or not. We have not yet recieved our final rating certificate, but for now it seems that we shall be racing in group 3 against X-332, X-99, X-482, Arcona 400, Dynamic 35, Elan 43, Drabant 38 etc. The official deplacement rating of Abstinenz will take place in the spring when she is ready for race. If the deplacement says approx. 5500 kg+, it could be so, that we shall be racing in group 2 against Hanse 315, Omega 30, Bianca 107, Maxi 999, First 31.7, Sagitta 35, Larsen 34 etc.

We will be 4 people on board Abstinenz (me, my wife and two guys who have been our crew for many years) and  for this season Abstinenz is rigged with North standard Hanse main (modified to include cunningham), North standard Hanse selftacking jib, Quantum 130% kevlar genoa and Quantum running asymm.spinnaker, max size 100,1m2 0,9 oz. Spinnakerpole will also be included.
Next year we also plan to participate in the watski2star double handed race in DK. An offshore race of aprox. 220 Nm with a 3 hour pit stop midway on an island.

I'm in Vancouver on the West Coast of Canada. There is a pretty active racing schedule here all year around.

Three of the local yacht clubs run "round the buoys" type races all year around. The most popular of these is the series run by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. THey consist of a set of Wednesday night races that start around the end of April and continue until September as well as every second weekend from November through until March. Each race is typically 1.5 - 2 hours.

In addition to that is a series run by the Vancouver Area Racing Council. There are 12 - 15 races during the year, on weekends. Each race is sponsored by a different yacht club and they are divided into 2 types - a regatta set (short distances, quite often around the buoys) and a long distance set (anything from all day to a day or two). Have a look at their web site for more info. http://www.varc.bc.ca/

On top of that, there are a couple of other "specialty" races that we have access to. Every second year there is a Victoria to Maui race. Another race that seems to be every second year now is a round Vancouver Island race (broken into 8 or 9 legs I believe). Also, there is another very popular race at the end of May called Swiftsure which starts in Victoria and heads out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca which separates the Olympic Peninsula (state of Washington, US) from Vancouver Island (Canada).

I've been crewing for a number of years on boats from 26 to 42 feet. My Hanse 400 is in commissioning at the moment and I intend to race it primarily in the VARC events.
