I had a factory fitted winch on my 342, and had the problem of the chain piling up and jamming, or requiring manual adjustment (pushing) of the pile of chain.  There was room to raise the mounting level of the winch by about 100mm, which helped considerably.  I would suggest a horizontal winch mounted as high as possible to clear the closed anchor hatch.

I've got a Lewmar Profish 1100 electrical windlass installed in the bow.

I do not use it a lot, as we normally use a anchor in the aft - and a rope in the bow, up here in Norway. The archipelago (just a clever word picked from the dictonary...) is mountainous, and great for jumping ashore!

The winch, homever, performs great! It can also be used with a combination of chain and rope - using a loose splice. I have not tried this myself yet, as my knowledge of splicing is poor... I've got 30 meters of 8mm acid proof chain ($), and a 10kg Delta anchor.

Be aware! The winch consumes amounts of power! The 700W motor drains your batteries like nothing. Be sure rev up the engine when operating this; idling at 900 o/min does not provide sufficient charge to avoid draining! That comes from my first hand experience from the first season, with a empty battery the first day of the weekend. (Without the external charge regulator and Ah-meter installed... Even the extra battery is not sufficient.)

The winch can also be equipped with a wireless remote, which is far better than the plug-in type remote that is delivered from Hanse. (You have to plug it in a socket in the bow, which means you have to be two persons working on the anchorage. With a remote this is easily done single handed!)

There is also a "free fall" kit available - but I do not know how this actually works out.

Homever, the 12kg "mushroom anchor" in the aft is heavy - stressful to handle. I'm therefore keen on getting a windlass installed at the stern as well - but I do not know if there is enough room for it. Does anyone hold any experience with this kind of installation?

Can anyone please share experience and or pictures of a windlass placement. I have decided it's time to have one fitted and im probably going to do it myself.
I would like to know firstly, how you connect the isoloator switch on the switch panel to the windlass to isolate the power. Is there a connection on the solenoid somewhere that allows this with the Lewmar windlass?
Also have you mounted the operationg switch on the pedestal head or is a foot switch present?
Many thanks.

shaukaas,

I have feared the thought of manually handling a heavy delta anchor from the stern. In stead, I have bought a Fortress anchor FX-16. It weights 4.5 kg and is suitable for boats 33-38 feet.

Anybody having some experience with Fortress anchor?

I'm very interested to see some photos of winlass installed as well...I'm quite sure there's many solutions with switches and buttons....and I'm yet to find the better place for those as I don't have a pedestal at all...
My main question is How to correctly position the windlass in the box so the chain(rope) doesn't jam...
I will also be droping the achor mostly from the stern, but I think the second windlass would definitely make my small boat as heavy as a battlecruiser (shaukaas - your boat is already like a Bismarck)...so I'm thinking of a good 5-7 kg max handheld anchor (like the one Raptor proposed)
