My Hanse 315 (2006) original navigation electronics have reached the end of their life span. In order to assemble a new plotter and to build a workable NMEA network I'm obliged to conduct the new wires from the pedestal mounted pad to the switchboard. I understood that the wires are conducted through plastic tubes, which end up in the compartment behind the switchboard in the cabin. I tried to lightly pull the existing wires inside the dismantled pedestal pad to see if they move but they seem to be stuck. 

How have you managed to do the same exercise? Do I need to remove the ceiling elements in the rear cabin to enable the project? Thank you in anticipation for your tips and ideas.

There might be some zip ties in place in hard to reach places preventing you from just pulling the old wires through.

Thanks Mike! In addition the wires behind the cabin switchboard are so well bundled by the manufacturer that I cannot access the end of the conducting tube. I'm most curious to hear how other members have solved the problem.

I didn’t have to strip any wires out but I did find an occasion where I had to run a new wire from the aft to the panel. In our 458 there is an extra, empty conduit from behind the port cabin which runs under the port cabin mattress, under the hanging locker and then behind the head to the panel area. It is easily accessible up until it runs behind the head. We had some difficulty getting the fishing line through to the panel area because of tight turns and that jumble of tightly packed wires back there. A little creative twisting got it through and we left a mousing line in case we needed it in the future.

We had our electronics upgraded on our Hanse 341 (2003) for this year with a new Raymarine Axiom plotter mounted on the pedestal in front of the steering wheel and a full AIS system.  I worked with the engineer on the installation and in the next couple of weeks I was intending to do a write up on the system for this forum.

Answering your immediate question.  I am sure Hanse will have made up the wiring harnesses (bundles of wires) on a bench separate to the yacht before installation and they will have taped all the wires together or used cable ties, so you cannot pull any wires.

I think your 315 will be very similar to our yacht.  On the 341, there is a box cover in the port cabin/locker roof underneath the steering wheel and the wires will come down to there from the instruments and then back into the stern locker.  If you look in the stern locker you will see a space under the sides of the cockpit and the wires just run through that space and they are not in a conduit.  So, the good news is that you should not need to remove any roof panels.

Starting from the stern locker we could push the tape through.  In the toilet, we could look up from below at both sides of the cupboard and see into the space where the cables are.  So, we could catch the tape there and thread it in stages further forward.  The inner top of the switchboard can be removed from the inside and we could the thread the tape to there.  Having removed that inner panel in the switchboard, you will also find the negative busbar (a bolt) where all the negative wires are connected.  (Well hidden by Hanse).

In the starboard cabin box, we also find all the wiring that Hanse had installed for an autopilot, so we used that as the power source for the plotter.

Do not forget to put extra mousing lines in for the future.

I have a Lewmar. I already dismantled the ceiling structures in the rear cabin underneath the pedestal. It turned out to be an inevitable move as it gave me full visibility and access to the two pedestal "tubes". The nasty thing is that Hanse has squeezed and zipped all the wires into the port side tube of the pedestal, i.e. it is challenging to pull out the unnecessary wires without damaging the compass and autopilot power wires. The starboard tube contains the gear and motor control wires and is tight as well. Further it has no hole into which the new plotter NMEA cable could be fed in.

It can be done I  done mine and added 2 cables. power and Nema 0183? . Use a wire pulling lubricant and pull out the cables witha mouse line attached. Pull the cables plus extras in pairs with a mosuse attached. Each time you pull a cable up attach a mouse for the next one as well. Lot's of oil and lots of wiggling - if you can get someone else top and bottom makes it easier. I lost a lot of wieght that day going from the rear cabin to the whreel back down to the cabin ...........................................................on my own

Are you sure you have to remove the redundant wires?  Is there no chance of re-using them, or just leaving them in?
When fitting our new plotter and AIS unit for this season, we managed to pull 2 or 3 new wires through that tube and that is despite the fact that there is even the power cable for the wheel mounted auto-pilot in that tube.  We doubted whether you could get anything up the starboard tube because of the engine controls.  

Technique.  Thread a draw tape (see above) down the tube through the hole by the pedestal.  Then pull back up a long length of mousing line.  Attach the mousing line to your first wire at the top hole in the pedestal.  I use a rolling hitch 7-10cm back from the end of the wire with a couple of extra half hitches near the end and sometimes a bit of tape to smooth the end. Tie the knots so that you have a couple of metres of mousing line tail left.   Then pull the wire down through the tube.  As Grumpydatagit implies, we had it easy, as there were 2 of us, one pushing at the top and the other pulling at the bottom.  You then should still have enough mousing line at the top that you can pull it back up and start again. Leave a mousing line in at the end.  

We mounted our AIS unit on the centre wall of the cabins just by the base of the steering wheel, so it will normally be inside those box covers
