Hi,
I know there is another thread now concerning saildrive oil level, but that one is related to a VP drive. This spring I had water in the oil, and lifted the boat and changed the oil seals. Easy and quick DIY job. I refilled the drive, but since then the oil level is moving up and down. I always wait at least 24h before opening the cap. The oil is still looking good - no water in the oil. This week the level was down again to the bottom of the (new and longer) stick. Today, 24h after tha last use of the boat, the level is at the top mark. Has happened several times now. If I do a new check in a few days, I guess the level will be at the bottom of the stick again. Can anyone explain this behaviour? |

Hi!
I found the problem. Air pockets. By opening the flathead screw on top of the housing before I measure I always get the correct level. Think I read about it in another thread or maybe it was another forum.

assume you put the seals in the correct way around?
if so then it is probably air, see my posts on cone clutch slipping and venting the crankcase of SD50. If you vent the gear case you will eliminate the air issue and stop the case pulling in sea water whilst cooling down.

Hi Stephen.
I have sourced the parts to make the vent this summer. I will use the same connector that I use when I put pressure on the gear to flush out the oil (as described in the manual). How long should the hose be - to secure that the oil level never exceeds the length of the hose to the filter? Are there no negative effects of having the vent instead of a closed unit?

Run the breather hose as high in the engine bay as possible.
No downside in venting the gear case at all only benefit.

Have vented the crankhouse as described by StavrosNZ. Works fine.
