Hi everyone,

Just a question for the group: have most owners replaced their saildrive diaphragm? . My boat is 2008 and still has it's original, so just wondered if its worth doing or not?

Advanced search->All Forums->Any Date->"diaphragm"............................gives 73 results.

The fairytale about the rubber diaphragm is that the service life is > 25 years. In real life a little shorter. As I remember, Volvo used to recommend 15 years between renewal, but in later years both Volvo and Yanmar are advocating for 5-10 years. Read the search results and be wiser.

Due to Hanse-Werfts faulty placement of the nuts on the engine mounts, my mounts broke in bad weather in 2012. (Metal-fatigue). The mounts were renewed, but while broken, the engine possibly had put extra stress on the diaphragm. Therefore I had it changed in 2014, when my boat was 8 years old.
The workshop manual for Yanmar tells to check the diaphragm(s) for hairline cracks every 1000 hours or 4 years. In my SD50 there are diaphragms A and B with a water sensor between, so if the outer diaphragm is leaking, an alarm sounds.

This is from the abovementioned search on myhanse:
"On Marco's wesailhanse page you can find a manual for Yanmar SD 20-50
Try to read page 49: Every 2000 motor-hours, replace engine mounts, and cone clutch!Or at page 48: Replace rubber diaphragm seal ring every 2 years!
Every year inspect and/or replace flexible engine mounts.Clearance between metal parts minimum 1 mm.
This and much more is found at wesailhanse.se"

SD20 manual says it should be replaced every 5 years.
I replaced mine after 8 years and it looked almost brand new.
It's worth to check the water ingress sensor to see if it is functioning.

I had the seal on my 2003-4 341 yacht with Yanmar engine and saildrive replaced for the first time over the winter 2019-20.  I checked the water sensor every year and it had never showed a problem.  I asked the engineer to let me see the seal, but he had disposed of it before I got to the yacht.  I did the job then as I realised that at some time in my ownership of the yacht it would need doing.

Talking to a friend in the marine insurance business, he has never had an incident of a yacht sinking because of a saildrive seal failure, but there are obviously 2 conclusions, either everybody changes them in time, or they never fail.

As an aside, I had a slight oil leak somewhere on the saildrive and it turned out that the input shaft seal had worn the input shaft and so I needed a new shaft and seal.

This is one area where I am not to certain how much the life of an item is affected by the environment and usage.   We sail in Scotland, so we have no extreme conditions and the yacht was typically out of the water for 5 months each winter.

Whilst you are having it done, you may as well ask them to do a good service on the engine.

My SD50 seal at 13 years old & 12 years in the water for 11 months of the year approx. Was absolutely fine. The job of stripping was however partially worth it to clear the limescale and a small plastic bag that had found itself into the waterways.

Hi
I replaced mine (2008 mod) this winter, and it was actually leaking tiny amount of seawater, due to hard "spots" on the rubber, see my post on the matter.

Other than the hard spots it looked perfect.....
