According to chapter 9 of the Yanmar electrics manual, the tacho works off a sensor that measures the flywheel turning. Has any one found where that is as I can't see one. This is the 4JH4E engine. Or was there a change over to take readings from the alternator?

On the smaller engines (like YM20, YM30 3JH the tacho is feed from the W winding on the alternator. I guess it's the same for 4JH.

Thanks Jesper,

Would make sense, I suppose I need to take the rev counter off and test it. Increasing the voltage should increase the revs if its from the alternator.

It is actually counting pulses. The AC of the alternator is feed thrue a "half bridge" of diodes giving 3 pulses per electrical revolution. On mine it's a yellow cable comming out of the Alternator and on the electrical drawing it is marked with a "P" on the tacho. I have a manua covering 4JH4AE, 4JH4-TE and 4JH4-HTE.

That infers it's what I call an electrical rather than a manual one.

My 'manual' is just chapter 9 of the 4JH electrical but shows a 'manual' take off for the tacho close to the starter motor on the bell housing, which will be why I can't find it.

I've changed my standard alternator to a 100amp Balmar so I'll see if I've a loose connection.

Thanks for the input
